Can a house be made almost entirely of glass and still be completely private? Frosted Glass House is our answer, and it is the question we are asked most often by Sydney clients building on tight blocks with close neighbours.
The brief was a deliberate contradiction: an architectural statement that could go unnoticed. Our clients wanted a home flooded with natural light, but secluded from every sightline around it. The response was a long, rectangular glass volume set on a delicate timber plinth, clad almost entirely in opaque glass. From the street, the house reads as a quiet, softly glowing form you could drive past without registering. Pause, and it is full of presence.
Inside, the frosted envelope transforms harsh sunlight into an even, diffused glow that reaches deep into the plan. Carefully placed skylights add direct views to the sky, while a series of private tropical courtyards bring greenery into the heart of the home, including one generous enough to drive into, so the owners’ car collection could be displayed within the landscape.
There were practical wins too. Opaque glass conceals the dirt and streaking that make fully glazed buildings demanding to maintain, and the muted street elevation, with just a thin ribbon of glazing above the entry, keeps the home secure without bars, screens or shutters.
The house sits on the outskirts of Bangkok, but the thinking travels. This design approach is directly relevant to the conditions we see across Sydney’s inner suburbs: narrow blocks in the Inner West with neighbours a metre away, overlooking issues on sloping North Shore sites, and council requirements around privacy and overshadowing that constrain conventional window placement. Translucent glazing, internal courtyards and borrowed sky views let a home be luminous without being exposed. It is a strategy we regularly adapt for Sydney projects where privacy and light appear to be in conflict.
