However, over the last year, we have noticed a dangerous trend. Increasingly, clients are coming to us with high resolution, ultra realistic renderings of homes they have generated themselves using AI tools.

It feels intoxicating to type in a prompt and see a jaw dropping, futuristic residence appear on screen in seconds. It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking, “I have designed my dream home. Why do I need an architect?”

The temptation to bypass professional design fees is understandable. But doing so lures homeowners directly into a massive trap—one that leads to unbuildable designs, spiralling construction costs, and devastating money pits.

Because at the end of the day, a building is a physical object. Once you commit to pouring concrete and fabricating steel, you are bound by the brutal financial realities of construction. For most people, a custom home is a once in a lifetime investment. You simply cannot afford to let an AI prompt bankrupt your dream.

While advanced engineering software today can theoretically figure out how to keep those wild shapes standing, software cannot alter the physical cost of materials, labor, and custom fabrication. • Custom-Molded Glass & Curvatures: AI loves smooth, sweeping glass facades. In reality, double-curved structural glass requires custom manufacturing molds that can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars just for a single panel.
• Gravity-Defying Cantilevers: An AI image might show a 15-meter floating upper floor hovering over a pool. Engineering it might be possible today, but the sheer volume of hidden steel reinforcement required will decimate a building budget before the foundation is even poured.
• Non-Standard Materials & Fabrication: AI mixes textures without care. It will seamlessly blend raw off-form concrete, rare stone, and intricate metal louvers into one image. Sourcing, shipping, and installing those specific combinations often requires specialized trades that command astronomical rates.

Taking an AI render directly to a builder without an architect’s intervention is financial suicide. A builder will either give you an astronomical quote to cover the insane risk, or worse, take the job on an estimate and hit you with catastrophic variation costs mid-construction.

The Evolution of the Trap: Scrapbooks, Pinterest, and Now AI

What the world is experiencing right now with AI is just the latest iteration of a behavior pattern we have managed for decades.

• 20 Years Ago: The Scrapbook Era. Clients brought scrapbooks packed with magazine cutouts. Those who tried to bypass architects went straight to builders. The result was a disjointed, chaotic mess where builders guessed, costs blew out on site, and clients ended up with a frankenstein home.
